A 550-foot observation wheel

The High Roller is a 550-foot observation wheel — the glowing centerpiece of The LINQ on the Center Strip. It’s built with 28 glass-enclosed cabins that are climate-controlled and roomy enough to share with your group, so you’re never crammed in. One full rotation takes about 30 minutes, and it moves so gently you can walk around your cabin the whole way up and back down.

360 degrees of Las Vegas

This is the reason to go. From the top you get a full 360-degree view — the Strip resorts lined up below you, the mountains ringing the valley, and on a clear day you can see for miles in every direction. It’s the kind of perspective that makes you realize just how much is packed into this city, and how the neon gives way to desert and neighborhoods the second you look past the Boulevard.

The open-bar cabin

If you want to make it feel like an occasion, look for the Happy Half Hour option. It’s the open-bar cabin — you get to enjoy a drink while the city rolls by beneath you, which honestly makes those 30 minutes fly. It’s my go-to when I’ve got out-of-town guests who want a little something extra. What’s included and when it’s offered can change, so check the official LINQ site before you book.

When to go up

Both are worth it, and they’re completely different rides. During the day you’ll see the mountains and the sheer scale of the valley — great for photos and for getting your bearings. After dark is pure Vegas: the Strip lit up end to end, and the wheel itself glowing against the sky. If you can only pick one, I lean toward sunset, right as the daytime view melts into the lights. If you can swing it, ride twice.

A few things I’d tell a friend

Buy your tickets ahead of time online — it’s usually cheaper than walking up, and you’ll skip the line. Make the whole evening out of it by strolling The LINQ Promenade first; there are restaurants, bars, and shops right at the base of the wheel. Bring a light layer even in summer, because the cabins are air-conditioned. And go ahead and take the photos, but put the phone down for a lap too — the view really is better with your own eyes.
