I’ve lived in Las Vegas my whole life, and one of my favorite things about this city is that the surprises never stop — including a full-blown aquarium hidden at the back of Mandalay Bay. Shark Reef opened here in 2000, and it’s still one of the most relaxing, kid-friendly ways to spend an hour on the Strip. You walk a quiet, self-guided path through jungle, shipwreck, and open-ocean settings while sharks, rays, and a sea turtle glide by on the other side of the glass. When my out-of-town family visits and the desert heat is too much, this is one of the first places I send them.

What makes Shark Reef special
An accredited aquarium, right on the Strip
Shark Reef is Nevada’s only aquarium accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) — a distinction earned through a multi-day, independent inspection of animal care and welfare. Inside, it holds more than 3,400 animals representing roughly 140 species across about 1.6 million gallons of water and 14 major exhibits. That’s a lot of ocean for a spot in the middle of the desert.
Sharks, a sea turtle, rays and more
The stars are the sharks, of course, but the exhibits are full of characters. Along the way you may spot a green sea turtle, stingrays, a giant Pacific octopus, drifting Pacific sea nettles, a Komodo dragon, piranhas, and pufferfish. Kids love that it’s a slow, walkable path — nobody’s rushing you, and there’s something new around every bend.
Rocky Coast — a cold-water California scene
Shark Reef added its Rocky Coast exhibit in 2023, a 35,000-gallon tank that recreates the cold-water California coastline. It’s home to four smaller shark species — leopard, horn, swell, and pyjama sharks — and gives you a completely different look at sharks than the big open-water tanks. It’s a nice reminder that not every shark is a giant.
Feedings and a VR theater
If you want to go beyond the standard walk-through, Shark Reef offers add-on animal experiences — including feedings with sharks, sea turtles, and stingrays — plus a virtual-reality theater. These are the kind of extras my clients’ kids talk about for the whole trip, so if you’re traveling with animal lovers, check what’s available when you book.
Before you go
Where it is: Inside Mandalay Bay, 3950 S. Las Vegas Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89119, at the south end of the Strip. It’s a bit of a walk from the casino floor, so give yourself a few extra minutes to find the entrance.
What to expect: A self-guided, indoor, air-conditioned path through 14 exhibits — easy on little legs and a great escape from the summer heat. Plan on roughly an hour, more if you add a feeding or the VR theater.
