Las Vegas Natural History Museum
Dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, an African savanna, and a working fossil lab — right in the heart of downtown, a few minutes off the Strip.
More Things to Do in Vegas →I grew up in Las Vegas, and the Natural History Museum is one of those spots that surprises people who think this city is only slot machines and neon. It sits on Las Vegas Boulevard North in the downtown cultural corridor, right across from the Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort, and it has been quietly delighting local kids and curious travelers for decades. Whether you have little ones who roar at every dinosaur or you just want an air-conditioned break from the summer heat, this is one of my favorite easy afternoons in town.

The museum is home to more than ten galleries packed with hands-on, family-friendly exhibits. You can travel from the age of the dinosaurs to the bottom of the ocean, walk through an African savanna, and peek into a real paleontology lab — all under one roof. Here are the highlights I always point visitors toward.

What you’ll see inside
Prehistoric Life Gallery
The Engelstad Family Prehistoric Life Gallery is the showstopper for most kids — towering dinosaur skeletons and prehistoric mammals that bring the age of giants to life. It is the kind of room where you hear a lot of gasps and see a lot of tiny heads craning up toward the ceiling.
Treasures of Egypt
A walk-through look at ancient Egypt, complete with a replica of King Tut’s tomb. It is a favorite with older kids and anyone who grew up fascinated by pharaohs, hieroglyphs, and mummies.
African Savanna
Lifelike scenes of Africa’s big animals and their habitats, plus galleries devoted to animal families from around the world. It is a great way to talk with kids about wildlife and ecosystems far from the desert.
Marine Life & the Ocean
Ocean-themed exhibits let you get up close with the creatures of the deep — a fun contrast in the middle of the Mojave. It is a reliable crowd-pleaser for the younger set.
Geology Hall, Meteorites & Space
Rocks, minerals, meteorites, and space-themed displays round out the science side of the museum. If you have a budding geologist or astronaut in the family, this is where they will linger.
Wild Nevada
Exhibits focused on Nevada’s own wildlife and desert ecosystems — the animals and landscapes that make our corner of the world so unique. As a lifelong local, this is the gallery I love sharing most.
Working Paleontology Lab
The museum has a real paleontology lab on site, where fossils are prepared and studied. It is a neat window into how the science actually happens, not just the finished displays.
