“O” at Bellagio, the show that changed everything

Divers, synchronized swimmers, and acrobats working over a pool that appears and disappears under their feet. It has been running at Bellagio since 1998 and it is still the one I send first-timers to.

If you only see one Cirque show in Las Vegas, I think it should be this one. I have taken out-of-town family to “O” more times than I can count, and the moment that always gets people is not a stunt — it is the first time the stage they were looking at turns into deep water and someone dives into it.

The theater was purpose-built for this show, the orchestra is live, and the whole thing runs 90 minutes without an intermission, so it never sags. It is also, honestly, the easiest Cirque show to recommend to a mixed group, because you do not need to like circus to like it.

What “O” is, and who it fits

Four things worth knowing before you pick a night.

The water is the point

Aquatic theater, built for the show

The stage floor rises and falls, so a dry platform becomes a pool mid-scene. Divers, swimmers, and acrobats trade places constantly.

Who it is for

Minimum age 5

Couples, anniversaries, milestone trips, and families with older kids. Cirque notes loud sounds and periods of darkness that may frighten some children.

Before you book “O”

The practical stuff that decides whether this is a great night or a rushed one.

1

Height matters more than distance

Much of the choreography happens on and under the water, and some of it happens high above it. A seat with a clean, elevated sightline often reads better than a low seat close to the stage.

2

Bring a layer

It is a theater built around a large pool on the edge of a desert. It runs cool. A light jacket is never the wrong call.

3

The minimum age is five

Cirque sets the minimum at five years old and warns about loud sounds and long stretches of darkness. If you have younger children with you, check my Las Vegas with kids guide instead.

4

Ninety minutes means ninety minutes

There is no intermission, so eat first or eat after. The Bellagio fountains run on their own schedule outside — give yourself a few minutes on the sidewalk either side of the show.

I have seen “O” a dozen times and I still do not entirely believe the stage. One second it is a floor with people standing on it, the next it is deep enough to dive into from the ceiling.

Questions

“O” at Bellagio, answered

How long is “O”?

Ninety minutes with no intermission.

Is there an age limit?

The minimum age is five. Cirque also notes that the show has loud sounds and periods of darkness that may frighten some children, so use judgment even above that age.

Will I get wet?

The performers do the swimming, not the audience. Seats closest to the stage can catch the occasional splash, which most people enjoy — but if that would bother you, sit back a few rows.

Where is the theater?

Inside Bellagio on the Las Vegas Strip, in a theater built specifically for this production.

How does “O” compare to the other Cirque shows?

“O” is the water one and the most universally liked. KÀ at MGM Grand is the story-driven one with the rotating stage, Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay is the concert-style one, and Mystère at Treasure Island is the original and the most family-friendly. My full Cirque du Soleil in Vegas guide compares them side by side, and the best shows in Las Vegas roundup covers everything else.
