Blue Man Group, and why nobody needs a translation

Three silent performers, a wall of drums, and a whole lot of paint. It’s the one Strip show I can recommend to a family with a seven-year-old and to a couple visiting from Osaka and be equally confident about.

I have lived in Las Vegas since I was five years old, and Blue Man Group has been here for most of the time I’ve been paying attention. That is unusual on this Strip. Shows come and go here constantly — I just wrote a whole page about a 25-year residency that ended this spring.

Blue Man is still standing, and it’s still the show I hand to people when they say “we want to see something, but half our group is under twelve and my mother-in-law doesn’t speak English.”

Here’s the honest pitch: it is not a magic show, it is not a Cirque show, and it is not a comedy set. Three performers in blue greasepaint do not speak for the entire run of the show, and somehow it still turns into the loudest, funniest, most physical thing on that end of the Strip. If you want the wider view of what else is playing, I keep a running list of the best shows in Las Vegas. This page is just about this one.

What Blue Man Group actually is

Four things worth understanding before you decide whether it’s your kind of night.

No dialogue at all

Any language, any age

The Blue Men never speak. That sounds like a gimmick until you’re sitting in a room where every single person is following along without a word of English. It travels better than any other show I’ve sent people to.

The percussion is the point

Live music, PVC pipe and paint

The instruments are built, not bought — drums loaded with paint, lengths of tubing, things struck rather than played. If you like live drumming you’ll leave happy on that alone.

Genuinely family-friendly

Recommended minimum age 3

The official show site puts the recommended minimum age at 3, with children 4 and older needing their own ticket. It is one of very few Strip shows I’d put a grade-schooler in front of.

Blue Man Theater, Luxor

3900 S Las Vegas Blvd

The theater sits on the mezzanine level of the Luxor. Give yourself extra time — the pyramid is not a building that hands you a straight line to anything.

What I tell friends before they book

Four things that decide whether this lands for your group or falls flat.

1

Decide how close you actually want to be

Blue Man Group is an audience-participation show, and the front section is where that participation happens. If someone in your party would rather die than be pulled onstage, buy back a few rows. The sight lines are good and nothing is lost.

2

Budget for the Luxor, not just the show

You are walking into a pyramid with inward-sloping walls and elevators that travel at an angle. The theater is on the mezzanine level. Arriving twenty minutes early here is not the same as arriving twenty minutes early at a normal theater.

3

It is loud, and it is meant to be

This is a percussion show at full volume with heavy lighting effects. If you’re bringing a sensitive kid or you have sound sensitivities yourself, that’s the thing to weigh — not the content, which is clean.

4

Check times at the box office, not on a blog

The official site says the schedule varies by season and that Blue Man performs most days of the year. I don’t publish showtimes here because they move. Confirm the date and time at checkout before you plan dinner around it.

It’s the only show on the Strip where I’ve watched a table of four generations walk out arguing about which part was best, and every one of them had a different answer.

Questions

Before you go

Is Blue Man Group appropriate for kids?

Yes — it’s one of the few Strip shows I say that about without a caveat. The official show site lists a recommended minimum age of 3, notes that children 3 and under don’t need a ticket but must sit on an adult’s lap, and that children 4 and older need their own ticket. If you’re building a whole trip around a family, I have a longer list of things to do in Las Vegas with kids.

How long is the show?

The official site says the show runs approximately 90 to 105 minutes with no intermission. Plan your evening around the longer number.

Do the Blue Men ever talk?

No. There is no spoken dialogue in the performance at all, which is exactly why it works so well for international visitors and for young kids who aren’t going to follow a comedy set.

Where exactly is the theater?

The Blue Man Theater is at the Luxor Hotel and Casino, 3900 South Las Vegas Boulevard, on the mezzanine level. It’s at the south end of the Strip, walkable to Mandalay Bay and Excalibur.

What if this isn’t our kind of show?

Then look at the Cirque du Soleil shows on the Strip, which are a completely different animal — acrobatic, scored, theatrical. Or start from my full list of the best shows in Las Vegas and work backward from what your group actually enjoys.
