Spring Mountain Ranch is one of those spots I love recommending to people who think Las Vegas is all neon and desert. It’s this quiet, green pocket of land below the Red Rock escarpment with old ranch buildings, big shade trees, and a lawn that practically begs for a picnic blanket. I try to make it out there every fall when the heat finally breaks.

A working ranch with a famous past
This 528-acre state park sits at the base of the Wilson Cliffs, a striking backdrop of red and gray sandstone. It was a working ranch and retreat for a string of owners over the decades, including comedian Chester Lauck and actress Vera Krupp, and Howard Hughes eventually owned it too. It became a Nevada State Park in 1973, and it still holds some of the oldest structures in the state, including an 1860s blacksmith shop and the historic Sandstone Cabin.
Picnics, history, and outdoor theater
Bring a lunch and claim a shady spot on the lawn, wander through the historic buildings, or walk the easy paths near the spring that gives the ranch its name. The park hosts Living History programs in spring and fall with costumed demonstrations of pioneer-era skills, and from May through September, Super Summer Theatre puts on outdoor performances right on the property. Guided tours are also available if you call ahead.
Cooler air, greener lawns, fewer crowds
Fall is a wonderful time to visit. The brutal summer heat lets up, the cottonwoods and shade trees on the property start to turn, and it’s simply more comfortable to sit outside for a while. It’s also when the Living History programs typically return, so you can time a visit around one of those events for something a little extra special.
Address, hours, and what to know
You’ll find the park at 6375 NV-159 in Blue Diamond, about 30 minutes west of the Strip. Hours shift with the season, generally shorter in winter months and later in summer, so check the current hours on the Nevada State Parks site before you head out. There’s a per-vehicle entrance fee, with a higher rate for out-of-state vehicles and a smaller fee for bikes; confirm the current amount on their site since park fees do change. Bring water, sun protection, and cash or a card for the entrance station.
