Sloan Canyon is one of those places I recommend to people who want the Red Rock kind of experience without the Red Rock kind of crowd. It’s tucked into the south valley in Henderson, and once you’re out on the trail you genuinely feel like you have the desert to yourself, right up until you round a bend and find rock art that’s been there for centuries.

A quieter kind of desert history
Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area protects thousands of acres of Mojave Desert wilderness in the south valley, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Its centerpiece is the Petroglyph Canyon Trail, where the walls of a rocky wash hold hundreds of petroglyphs carved by Native peoples going back centuries. It’s a genuinely peaceful spot, with far fewer visitors than the more famous hiking areas around town.
Hike the Petroglyph Canyon Trail
The Petroglyph Canyon Trail is a rocky, mostly flat wash hike of roughly 5.5 miles round trip if you go all the way to the petroglyph panels, though you can turn back earlier and still see plenty. It’s not shaded, and the footing is loose and rocky in spots, so wear real hiking shoes. Please view and photograph the petroglyphs without touching them, since the oils on our hands can damage the rock art over time.
Made for cooler mornings
This trail has zero shade, so it’s genuinely rough in summer, with surface temperatures that can exceed 110 degrees. Fall changes everything. Morning temperatures finally cool off enough to comfortably hike the full distance out to the petroglyph panels, and weekday mornings in particular tend to be wonderfully quiet.
Getting there and what to bring
The trailhead is off Nawghaw Poa Road in Henderson, about 25 to 30 minutes from the Strip. Trail access and parking have shifted recently due to nearby construction, so check the BLM Sloan Canyon page for the current trailhead and route before you go. It’s day-use only, hours vary by season, and there’s no fee. There are no restrooms at the trailhead, dogs aren’t permitted (service animals are fine), and you’ll want at least a gallon of water per person, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. Watch your step for rattlesnakes on the trail.
