Las Vegas Itinerary: How Many Days Do You Need?

I get asked this constantly: how long should you spend in Las Vegas? The honest answer depends on what kind of trip you’re building. Here’s the quick way to figure out your number, then two full itineraries to follow once you know.

Lifelong Las Vegan Built from two full itineraries Updated for 2026
1 DayA layover or a quick add-on to a bigger Western trip
3 DaysThe length I recommend for most first-time visitors
5+Days for day trips, an extra show, and a slower pace

I’ve lived in Las Vegas since I was five, and this question comes up more than almost any other from people planning a trip here. There isn’t one right answer. It depends on why you’re coming: a layover you’re stretching into a day, your first real Vegas vacation, or a trip where you want to see everything from the Strip to the desert around it.

This page won’t give you an hour-by-hour plan. It’s the map that tells you which plan to open next. Pick your version below, then click through to the full itinerary.

Quick Reality Check

Which One Sounds Like Your Trip?

Three honest snapshots. Find yours, then jump to that section.

Just Passing Through

One day is enough to walk the Strip, eat a great meal, and maybe catch a show if the timing lines up. Perfect for a layover or a road-trip add-on.

Your First Real Trip

Three days is the sweet spot: the Strip, a night downtown, a real show, and one bigger adventure, all without feeling rushed.

You Want It All

Four days or more opens up Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead, a helicopter flight over the Strip, and a second show.

Option One

Got One Day in Las Vegas?

Make it count.

Make Every Hour Count

If you’ve got one day between flights or you’re tacking Las Vegas onto a bigger Western road trip, skip the complicated planning. You need one really good day: a walk down the Strip, a meal that feels like Vegas, and a show if the timing works out.

I built a full hour-by-hour plan for exactly this trip, including where to leave your bags and what to do if your flight doesn’t leave until midnight.

Three Days Is the Flagship Vegas Trip

If you’re asking me how long to plan for your first trip, three days is my answer nine times out of ten. It’s long enough to see the Strip properly, spend an evening downtown, catch a real show, and still leave room to breathe.

1

Day One: Strip First Impressions

Check in, walk the Strip after dark, and let the lights do the work.

2

Day Two: Explore & Book a Show

Fremont Street by day, a Cirque or magic show by night.

3

Day Three: One Big Adventure

A helicopter flight, a day trip, or a slower brunch before your flight.

Option Three

Have Four Days or More? Here’s What to Add

Extra days don’t need their own separate itinerary. They need a few extra stops layered onto the 3-day plan. Here’s where I’d send you, depending on what you love.

Love the outdoors?Red Rock Canyon

Twenty minutes from the Strip, with trails for every fitness level and some of the best sunset views in the valley. See the trail guide →

Want the water?Lake Mead

Boating, swimming, and quieter desert scenery about 45 minutes from the Strip. Things to do around Lake Mead →

Chasing a view?Helicopter Tours

A sunset or night flight over the Strip, or all the way out to the Grand Canyon, is the splurge worth adding on day four or five. Browse Las Vegas helicopter tours →

Need another night out?A Second Show

Three days usually means one show. Extra days mean you can add a second: comedy or magic one night, a headline production the next. See the best shows in Las Vegas →

Last Step

Before You Lock In Your Itinerary

Book your show first

The best shows sell out on weekends, especially Friday and Saturday nights. Pick your show before you finalize hotel dates.

Check the season

Summer heat changes what’s realistic outdoors. Save Red Rock Canyon hikes for early morning, May through September.

Decide on rental car vs. rideshare

The Strip and downtown are walkable and rideshare-friendly. A car mainly helps for Red Rock, Lake Mead, or the airport.

Build in one slow morning

Even a 3-day trip goes smoother with one morning that isn’t scheduled. Las Vegas nights run late.
