Fresh, Festive, and Genuinely Good

Border Grill sits right along the Lazy River and Mandalay Beach pool at Mandalay Bay, so you get the festive Vegas energy on the patio and a menu that could hold its own anywhere. It is my pick for the crowd that wants a real meal, not just a pitcher of something neon.

When I put together the list of places to go now that Senor Frog’s has closed, I wanted at least one option for the group that includes someone who does not want a neon slushie the size of their head. That is Border Grill. It is still lively, still on a patio with a view, still very Vegas. It just also happens to be run by two chefs who have been cooking together since before most of the Strip’s current restaurants existed.

If your crew is a mix of people who want to party and people who want a plate of food they will actually remember, this is the compromise that works. You can read the rest of my picks on the Senor Frog’s replacement list, but if I had to send just one group here, this is usually it.

The Patio

Right on the Lazy River

Border Grill has two levels of outdoor patio dining plus its own outdoor bar, and the tables look out over the Lazy River and Mandalay Beach pool area. It is one of the few Strip patios where you can eat a real meal and still feel like you are at the pool party without actually being in a swimsuit.

That setting is a big part of why it earns a spot on this list. It has the same festive, sunny, watch-the-people-go-by energy as a beach bar, just dialed up with better food and a nicer glass of something in your hand.

LocationWhere to find it

Inside Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino at 3950 S Las Vegas Blvd, near Shark Reef and the convention center, next to sister concept BBQ Mexicana.

The ConceptWhat they cook

Modern, fresh Mexican food from chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger, the duo known as the "Too Hot Tamales" from their Food Network days. Bold, produce-forward Mexican cooking pulled from regions across Mexico, not a Tex-Mex combo plate menu.

Vibe & TierWhat to expect

Upscale casual with a party-adjacent patio. It leans more polished than a straight-up cantina, closer to a nice dinner out that happens to have a great view. Check the official site for current menu pricing.

Brunch & ReservationsPlan ahead

Border Brunch runs Saturday and Sunday, generally late morning into the afternoon, and it books up on the patio. Reserve ahead through OpenTable and check the official site for current hours since weekend brunch schedules do shift.

1

Ask for the patio

Request outdoor seating when you book. It is the whole point of coming here instead of somewhere inside.

2

Go early for brunch

Weekend brunch on a resort patio fills fast. Book the early seating if you want a table without a wait.

For a group that wants to sample more of the Strip’s chef-driven restaurants the same weekend, a guided Strip celebrity chef food tour is a fun way to build the whole night around eating well.
