What Colors Help Sell a House?

The right paint is one of the cheapest ways to move a home faster and for more money. Here are the interior and exterior colors buyers respond to right now, room by room, plus the ones that quietly cost you offers.

Why paint color moves the needle

Buyers decide how they feel about a house in the first few seconds, and a lot of that feeling is color. Paint is the highest-return prep you can do because it is cheap, it is fast, and it changes the whole read of a room in listing photos and in person.

The pattern in the research is consistent. Warm, calm, current neutrals let buyers picture their own furniture and their own life in the space. Loud or dated colors do the opposite, they make people stall. In Zillow’s 2025 study, darker shades of green, blue, and gray actually outperformed plain white in several rooms, so “just paint it all white” is no longer the safe default it used to be.

Paint is the closest thing I have to free money for a seller. A weekend and a few hundred dollars in the right color can be worth thousands at the offer table.Lori Ballen · Keller Williams Realty Las Vegas

The best colors, room by room

Swipe through the four rooms that matter most to buyers. Each card has the color that tests best and the ones to skip.

Kitchen

Kitchen

Soft, nature-based color reads fresh and clean. A muted olive green on an island or lower cabinets tested best, with warm greige on the walls to keep it light in photos.

Living

Living Room

This is the room where a moody neutral pays off. Charcoal gray and deep, soft neutrals feel current and photograph rich. Balance it with light trim so the space still feels open.

Bedroom

Bedroom

Buyers want bedrooms to feel restful, and deep blue delivers that better than beige. A navy or deep-blue wall reads calm and modern. Keep bedding and trim soft and light around it.

Exterior

Exterior & Front Door

Greige is the go-to body color, gray and beige blended so it works in Las Vegas sun. Then make the front door the moment: black, charcoal, deep navy, or forest green all pull stronger offers than plain white.

Colors to avoid before you list

These are the shades that consistently slow a sale or shrink the offer. If any of them are on your walls or door, repaint before the photos.

🌽

Bright yellow

A daisy or lemon yellow was the single worst performer in the 2025 data, especially in kitchens and living rooms. It reads loud, not cheerful, to most buyers.

🔴

Fire-engine red

Strong red walls polarize fast and hurt offers in bedrooms and living rooms. Save the bold accent for a throw pillow, not the paint.

🌈

Neon and bright primaries

Hot pink, electric orange, and saturated primary colors alienate the widest slice of buyers. They date a room and pull attention off the space.

🏹

Tuscan gold and terracotta

Deep golds, sienna, and heavy terracotta read late-2000s. They make a home feel older than it is in photos.

Stark, cold white

Pure builder white can look flat and clinical. Buyers respond to warm whites with a little softness, not a hospital wall.

🔏

Dark walls with dark trim

A moody wall can work, but pairing it with equally dark trim makes rooms look cramped and cave-like in listing shots. Keep the trim light.

Paint-to-sell questions I hear most

What is the safest interior color if I only paint one thing?

A warm white or soft greige on the main living walls. These read clean in photos, light in person, and let a buyer's furniture do the talking.

Popular picks agents lean on are Benjamin Moore White Dove and Edgecomb Gray, and Sherwin-Williams Alabaster and Agreeable Gray.

Do I really need to paint before selling?

If your walls are bold, dark, dated, or scuffed, yes. Fresh neutral paint is usually the highest return per dollar of any prep work.

If your colors are already soft and current and the walls are clean, spend your money elsewhere.

What front door color adds the most value?

Black and charcoal test strongest, tied to roughly six thousand dollars in higher offers versus a plain white door in Zillow's door research.

Deep navy, forest green, and rich burgundy also perform well. The door is a low-cost, high-impact place to add a little personality.

Do dark colors help or hurt when selling?

It depends on the room. In the 2025 analysis, darker greens, blues, and grays actually beat plain white in kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms.

The trap is going dark everywhere. Keep trim and ceilings light so the darker walls feel intentional, not heavy.

What is the best exterior color for a Las Vegas home?

Greige, a gray-beige blend, is the most popular contemporary body color and holds up well in the desert sun. Softer, earthy tones photograph better than stark or trendy shades.

Then let the front door carry the color with a black, navy, or deep green.

How much does painting cost versus what it returns?

A single interior room is often a few hundred dollars in paint and a weekend of work, and the right color can be worth several thousand at the offer table.

That return-to-cost ratio is why I tell almost every seller to paint before we shoot photos.
