That’s the thing about the Mob Museum. It’s not a gimmick or a wax-figure attraction. It’s a genuinely well-researched museum built inside the actual building where Senate hearings on organized crime once played out, and it tells the true story of how Vegas grew up alongside the mob and the agents who chased them. If you want to understand this city beyond the casino floor, this is where I send my friends and family every single time.

Inside the Museum
A Federal Courthouse With Its Own History
The museum lives inside downtown’s former federal courthouse and post office, dedicated in 1933 and used by the government until 2005. The restored courtroom on the second floor is the same room where, in 1950, Senator Estes Kefauver’s committee held hearings on organized crime that drew a television audience bigger than that year’s World Series. Standing in that courtroom is one of my favorite parts of the visit.
Bullet Holes You Can See With Your Own Eyes
On the third floor, you’ll find a section of the actual brick wall from the Chicago garage where seven men were gunned down in the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, bullet marks still visible in the brick. Elsewhere in the building you’ll walk through exhibits on wiretapping, casino skimming, and the federal agents who built cases against the mob, plus a hands-on firearm training simulator that puts you in an officer’s shoes for a split-second use-of-force decision (it requires a separate ticket from general admission).
A Real Speakeasy and Distillery in the Basement
Downstairs, The Underground recreates a Prohibition-era speakeasy, complete with a working copper still that actually produces moonshine and a bar pouring Prohibition-style cocktails. It keeps its own extended hours separate from the main galleries, so you can tour the museum during the day and come back for a drink at night. It’s one of the few places in Vegas where the history and the happy hour are the same room.
