The short answer

Yes. Las Vegas is an incorporated city in southern Nevada, and it is the seat of Clark County. It was settled in 1905 when railroad land was auctioned off, and it officially became a city on March 16, 1911.

Here is where it gets interesting. The City of Las Vegas covers the downtown core and the north and west sides, but it is only one piece of the valley. Most of the metro area lives in unincorporated Clark County, inside townships like Paradise, Enterprise, Spring Valley, and Winchester. So when someone says they live in “Las Vegas,” they often live in the valley, not the actual city limits.

The Strip surprise: The Las Vegas Strip is not in the City of Las Vegas. It sits in the unincorporated town of Paradise. Legally, the Bellagio and Caesars Palace are in Paradise, Nevada, even though the world knows them as Las Vegas.

Is the Strip in Las Vegas?
Not officially. The main stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard, from Mandalay Bay up to the Stratosphere area, sits mostly in the unincorporated township of Paradise, with the north end in Winchester. The mailing addresses say Las Vegas, but the city limits do not include it.
What county is Las Vegas in?
Clark County. Las Vegas is the county seat, which means the main county government offices are downtown. Clark County also runs all the unincorporated townships that surround the city.
Is Summerlin a city?
