Saint Joseph is billed as “the Patron Saint of Real Estate”, leading many home sellers to turn to this former carpenter for divine intervention with their real estate woes!

Many people selling their house use the St Joseph prayer to sell a house.

Known for his work with wood, St. Joseph (also known by Spanish-speakers as San Jose, and as San Giuseppe by Italians) is rumored to bring good luck to anyone who wants to sell their home quickly (and for a good price, of course).

Why It’s Done

Known for his work with wood, St. Joseph (also known by Spanish-speakers as San Jose, and as San Giuseppe by Italians) is rumored to bring good luck to anyone who wants to sell their home quickly (and for a good price, of course).

It seems that the tradition of burying a plastic St. Joseph to speed up the sale of property became popular in the United States during the mid-1980’s; at that time, many real estate agents were buying these little plastic statues by the case!

Since then, many homeowners have credited the success of their sale to the Saint, and this luck-attracting tradition remains popular among Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

The practice involves planting a small St. Joseph statue, upside down, in the lawn or garden of the home while simultaneously asking for some divine intervention.

The only catch is, the statue must be dug up once the house sells, and taken with the owner to their new residence where it will be kept in a place of honor within the home.

The connection between St. Joseph and real estate goes back to the Middle Ages, when an order of European nuns was said to have buried a medal of the carpenter-turned-saint on a piece of land they hoped to acquire as the site of their new convent.

These nuns asked the saint to intervene, and soon after, they were able to negotiate the purchase of their desired property.

Other stories claim that German carpenters would bury a statue of St. Joseph in the foundation of the buildings they constructed, praying that the saint would protect the structure.

Where to Bury The St. Joseph Statue

The exact location of where the St. Joseph statue should be buried is up for debate – some say that it’s important to place the statue upside-down, about 12″ below the earth between the real estate ‘for sale’ sign and the street, as this will encourage sellers to come onto the property.

Others claim that the statue should be buried in the garden close to the foundation of the building, as this will attract money and buyers to the site.

Condo-dwellers are advised to plant their St. Joseph statue in a flower pot on their balcony or inside their unit rather than burying the statue on the lawn of the building, as this might attract a buyer for a neighboring unit instead of their own!

How To Bury The Statue

  1. Buy a St Joseph Statue
  2. Find the right location in the yard near the For Sale Sign or the road
  3. If you are in a condo, bury it in a pot of soil.
  4. Facing the Property, bury the statue upside down
  5. Say the St. Joseph Prayer while burying him
  6. Continue to say the prayer until the house sells
  7. When it works, take the statue to your new home and display in reverence.

The St Joseph Prayer

Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God. I place in you all my interests and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers.

Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary of contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask him to return the Kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls – Pray for me.

This prayer was found in the fifteenth year of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle.

Whoever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, not shall poison take effect of them; neither shall they fall into the hands of the enemy; or shall be burned in any fire, or shall be overpowered in battle.

Say for nine mornings for anything you may desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask.
